On August 14, 2024, we lost our guiding light! Devoted wife, beloved mother and treasured grandmother, Sylvia Lorene Chisolm Vandevere, went home to be with her Lord and Savior.
Sylvia passed away peacefully at her home in Free Run after a long four-year battle with breast cancer. Sylvia was born the only daughter to Zelma Netherland and Lamar Zeigler Chisolm of Coxburg on June 16, 1945. On June 17, 1967, Sylvia married the love of her life Phillip Monroe Vandevere and moved to Free Run.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents; and a younger brother, Leorren.
She leaves behind her husband Phillip; children, Phylis Marlo Vandevere, Tamara Jo Faulkner (Brent), Phillip Monroe Vandevere, Jr., Bubba (Jana), Nikki Payne Powell (Peter); and the lights of her life, six beloved grandchildren, Jewell, Garrett, and Tanner Vandevevere, Marley Faulkner and Riley and Britt Powell. Sylvia also leaves behind a brother, Lamar Zeigler Chisolm, Jr. (Jean) and many nieces and nephews.
With an ever present smile on her face, joy and kindness in her words, a selfless spirit of giving and helping others, Sylvia never met a stranger. Sylvia spent her children’s school years as a full-time mother and homemaker. She was a very active member of the Free Run Homemakers Club. A 4-H member herself, it was only fitting that Sylvia serve as a 4-H Volunteer Leader. She also served as Chairman of the Yazoo County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee. She worked at Yazoo Valley EPA, at Benton Academy where she was in charge of all sporting event concession stands for over 24 years and was a School Bus Driver, and she retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier, a job she loved. Sylvia served the residents of Beat 4 as their Election Commissioner for 16 years.
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services were held at Rocky Springs Baptist Church, Eden Midway Road on Saturday, August 17. Visitation was from 1-3 p.m. with the service following. Graveside and burial was held at Rocky Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers Sylvia’s family would like donations to be made in her honor to Benton Academy Athletics or Yazoo County 4-H
