Janet Swinney Martin, born on March 29, 1944, to Mattie and Willie Rathell Swinney, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2024.
Janet dedicated her life to her family. She was a beloved wife to the late George Franklin Martin, and a devoted mother to her two children: the late Thomas “Tommy” Mitchell (Diane) of Lexington and Marie Thomas (Jimmie Dale) of Lexington, and a sister to the late Auburtin Swinney.
She cherished her role as a grandmother to five grandchildren: Dee Word (Justin), Dana Hammons (Chad), Jimmie Thomas (Shae), Emily Thomas, and Tommy Mitchell Jr. Janet was also a proud great-grandmother to ten great-grandchildren.
In her professional life, Janet was one of the youngest employees at Henson Kickernick, and she worked at People’s Drug Store in Lexington for 30 years. Her caring spirit earned her the affectionate nickname “Maw” from those closest to her. One of her favorite roles was teaching Sunday School at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
Janet lived a full and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be remembered by all who knew her.
Visitation was held at Southern Funeral Home in Lexington on Sunday, November 3 from 5:00-8:00pm and Monday, November 4 from 1:00-2:00pm. Service was held at 2:00pm Monday, November 4 at Southern Funeral Home. Interment followed at Beulah Baptist Church in Lexington.
