Doristeen Washington, born on September 24, 1958, in Lexintgton, Mississippi, to her mother Sallie Ree Brooks and her father the late Leonard Johnson. She departed from this world on June 9, 2024, leaving behind the legacy of her faith, a commitment to excellence and a melting pot of endearing friendships.
Her childhood was filled with love, raised by her loving parents, Lee Henry and Sallie Ree Brooks. One sister Joyce W. Sanders preceded her in death.
She embraced her faith and accepted her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at an early age while attending Galilee United Methodist Church and becoming a member. Doristeen graduated from Lexington Attendance Center and matriculated to Jackson State University, where she thrived as a Dean’s Scholar and a campus beauty with a magnetic personality.
She was initiated into the Gamma Rio chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, where she was known for her style and grace as well as her superb stepping capabilities as the Ace stepper during Greek shows.
Doristeen was a very proud alumnus of Thee Jackson State University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Business Administration degree.
Upon graduating from college, Doristeen began a thirty-five year career at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. Her dedicated work and service was rewarded with many career advancements that included the titles of Administrative Secretary, Project Coordinator, Project Administrator, and Education Administrator, her retirement title. She sprang into a second career as a public relations liaison for the City of Jackson, at Visit Jackson.
Doristeen joined Pearl Street AME Church after she graduated from college, where she served as faithful member until her passing. She enjoyed singing in the choir, attending Sunday School, and participating in numerous church functions.
Doristeen had a very active and accomplished social life that included being a devoted Charter member of Rho Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and being voted Soror of the Year. Rho Lambda Omega chapter members also named her Mentor of the Year with the Ambassadors for the Evers Academy of African American Males Mentorship Program. She also served on the Jackson Graduated Pan-Hellenic Council where she served a term as President.
She was a long-standing member of the Jackson State University National Alumni Association.
Doristeen leaves to cherish her memories, a loving mother Sallie R. Brooks; two brothers, Lee Marvin Brooks of Lexington, MS and Maurice Brooks (linda) of Lexington, MS; a loving goddaughter Markeshia Washington of Lexington, MS; brother-in-law Edward Sanders of Los Angeles, California; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
