John R. “Bob” Brown, III
1950 – 2025
John R. “Bob” Brown, III, age 75, passed away on October 9, 2025. He spent his life between Durant and Lexington, never far from the places that shaped him and the friends who became family along the way. He was known for his easy humor, generous spirit, and love of music, the outdoors, and good company.
A gifted musician, Bob began sharing his love of music early in life. He was a proud member of The Coachmen at Holmes Junior College before continuing his education at Delta State University, where he earned his master’s degree in music. Bob began his career as a music teacher before later joining Fleetwood Homes and then Lexington Homes, where he worked until his retirement. His love of music stayed with him throughout his life.
He cherished his place, “Lake Bob,” where he spent countless hours fixing it up, working on projects, and enjoying the peace of the outdoors. He was a lifelong reader who enjoyed a good book as much as a good story, and he was always up for both. An avid hunter, Bob especially loved deer season and the time it brought with friends and family. Always up for a good time, he had a gift for making people laugh and making everyone feel welcome.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Strub Brown and J.R. Brown, Jr.; his sister, Sally Beam; and his wife of 36 years, Jennifer Sterling Brown.
He is survived by his daughters, Sterling (Taylor) Aldridge and Betsy Brown; two beloved grandsons, Anders Aldridge and John Alden Aldridge; his partner, Eva Bethany; and his sisters, Margaret Anne Brown Webb and Caroline (Roy) Sims.
Bob will be remembered for his generosity, warmth, and the joy he brought to those around him. His family and friends will miss him dearly and will carry forward his laughter, kindness, and love of life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Jennifer Sterling Brown Animal Rescue (“JSBAR”), P.O. Box 398, Lexington, MS 39095, an organization close to Bob’s heart.
Visitation was held at 2:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Durant Church, 213 W. Madison St., Durant, MS 39063. Interment follow ed at Mizpah Cemetery, with a celebration of Bob’s life continuing afterward at Lake Bob.
